Guru Angad Dev Ji
(The Second Guru of Sikhism)
Biography
1. Born on March 31, 1504, in the village of Sarae Naga in present-day Pakistan.
2. Originally named Lehna, he was a devout disciple of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
3. After witnessing his devotion and humility, Guru Nanak Dev Ji chose him as his successor.
4. Guru Nanak Dev Ji renamed him Angad (meaning "limb" or "part of the body") to signify his close connection with himself.
5. Guru Angad Dev Ji served as Guru from 1539 until his passing in 1552.
6. He played a crucial role in organizing and propagating the teachings of Sikhism during his tenure as Guru.
Teachings
1. Emphasized the importance of devotion (Bhakti) to the Supreme Being, emphasizing love and surrender.
2. Promoted the concept of Seva (selfless service) as a means to spiritual growth and societal harmony.
3. Institutionalized the Gurmukhi script, which became the standard script for writing Punjabi language and Sikh scriptures.
4. Encouraged physical fitness and well-being through activities such as wrestling (Pehlwani) and swimming.
5. Stressed the significance of a disciplined lifestyle, including daily meditation and recitation of hymns (Naam Simran).
6. Advocated for the equality of all human beings regardless of caste, creed, or gender, laying the foundation for the egalitarian principles of Sikhism.
